COPPA

South Western School District is committed to providing your student with the most effective web-based tools and applications for learning. The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), a federal law, requires parental notification and consent for student use of district approved online resources for instructional purposes. The law permits schools to act as the parent's agent and can consent to the collection of student information on the parent's behalf with parent permission.

A complete list of the programs with the privacy policy and terms of service for each can be found below. South Western School District creates student accounts for several contracted computer software applications and web-based services such as Moodle, Study Island, and Discovery Streaming. By contract, these vendors have agreed to protect student privacy and adhere to COPPA regulations.

Any additional web-based educational programs and services which our schools may add during the upcoming academic year will be accompanied by a separate request for parent permission.

For more information on COPPA, click here.

The changing educational environment and level of technology integration may require that students access web-based technology tools while using non-South Western owned equipment (e.g. home computer, cell phone, etc.) and/or using non-South Western owned resources (e.g. Internet, Cellular data, etc.).

Such tools include, but are not limited to, hardware, software, Internet access, web-based applications (e.g. Gmail, Wikispaces.com, Blackboard, Blogs, Discussion Boards, Podcasts, etc.), personal electronic devices, telecommunication products, audio/video equipment, and any other tool used for classroom instruction.

Any student user accounts created by South Western personnel or by students, for the purpose of completing course curriculum are subject to the guidelines defined by the Acceptable Use Policy of the South Western School District, regardless of where the access to that technology tool has taken place.

At a minimum, all South Western students will be assigned a network login, a South Western School District Google Apps for Education account (includes District Gmail (email) and Google Drive) in the South Western Google organization. All email will be filtered for profanity and archived for a period of two weeks. If you prefer that your child not be assigned any one of these accounts of educational purpose, please submit your specific request, in writing, to your building principal.

The district has made every reasonable attempt to ensure that the district’s web pages are educationally sound and do not contain links to any questionable material or anything that can be deemed in violation of district policy. The accuracy and quality of information cannot be guaranteed. The district will not be responsible for any information that may be lost, damaged, or unavailable due to technical or other difficulties.
